History
During the summer of 2006, two separate groups of GW seniors—Lehman Brothers interns Julie Beggans and Desiree Shapouri and Bear Stearns interns Katie Considine and Samara Daniels—conceived an organization for undergraduate women interested in pursuing professional careers. The two groups of students approached the School of Business in the early fall about the possibility of starting the organization. In the spirit of cooperation and recognition that working together would strengthen and improve the success of the endeavor, the two camps united to bring GW Women in Business to campus.
The organization's official launch event took place on November 1st, 2006 with faculty, administrators, campus media, and new members in attendance. Highlights of the evening included keynote addresses from Dean Susan Phillips of the School of Business and Scott Brennan of Lehman Brothers. A successful first semester on campus followed the organization's official kick-off. GWWIB presented two career workshops, a Thanksgiving clothing drive, and a speech by Laura Liswood, founder of the Council of Women World Leaders and a consultant to Goldman Sachs.
At the start of its second semester at the university, GWWIB maintained over 125 active members from over 40 majors and all undergraduate schools. The organization looked forward to continuing and expanding upon the tradition of excellence it had already established for itself in just a few short months of existence.
